What Christmas is all about

It's not about shopping malls, Christmas trees, holiday lights, wrapping paper, bows, money, the latest gismos and gadgets that we'll ignore in a month.

For months, people exclaim "I want, I want, I want" or "I need, I need". And then for a period of about a half hour on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, its "gimme, gimme, gimme". And then once we open all of our presents that family and friends have spend their hard earned money on, we find someway to be ungrateful and reflect on the fact that we didn't get everything we really wanted.

No, Christmas is about giving--giving to others who don't have anything.

I've heard people exclaiming for long as I can remember seeing and experiencing the true meaning of Christmas, but in my 22, I had not truly experienced Christmas--until today. On a day where I am away from my family, working and did not celebrate the holiday in usual fashion, I witnessed a selfless act of giving. Children giving to other children whose families could not afford to provide them with something special on Christmas Day, let alone a stable place to live for more than a week. Nineteen children from the Academy of Arts and Sciences raised enough money to purchase 180 gifts for the children who are living at the Haven Center this week. This selfless act gave 15 children the opportunity to experience Christmas (in the commercial sense) like most kids do and have new toys to play with. Each time the kids were handed a new present, the smiles on their faces grew wider
and brighter.

It definitely touched my heart and made me appreciate all that I have even though I was unable to celebrate Christmas with my family as in previous years.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
